On Saturday May 5, 2012 at 12:41 p.m., Jackson resident Gary Thacker, age 58 was driving his Buick sedan on South New Prospect Road when another Jackson resident Christoph Sukovich, age 32 driving a Chevrolet sedan the opposite direction lost control of his car, veering from a curb on the right side crossing the center line, striking the Buick on the driver’s side doors. The force of the collision pinned Mr. Thacker in his car when both driver’s side doors were damaged, however his injuries were less serious due to the fact that he was wearing a seat belt. Mr. Thacker was extricated by fire fighters from Jackson Station 55 and Jackson Mills Station 54, and taken to Kimball Hospital by Quality EMS where he was treated for a shoulder and arm injury. Sukovich, the driver of the Chevrolet, was not wearing a seat belt, sustained several injuries, and was transported by Quality EMS to Jersey Shore Hospital. According to the Asbury Park Press, Sukovich was charged by the Jackson Police Department for six motor vehicle offenses including DWI. A link to the APP article is as follows:

Just after midnight on Saturday May 5, 2012 a small but smoky electrical fire in a heating / air conditioning unit located in an enclosed walkway between the Vineyards Offices and the Bank of America Branch building on County Line Road filled both buildings with heavy black noxious smoke.
Cleaning contractors working inside the office building noticed smoke coming into the building and went outside to investigate, meanwhile a passing motorist on County Line Road saw the fire and called 9-1-1. Arriving Jackson Police officers used a dry-chemical fire extinguisher to knock the fire down, shortly thereafter Jackson Mills Engine 5411 crews arrived and stretched a hand line into the building, and used a dry chemical to extinguish the fire. The fire produced a high volume of smoke which was carried into the adjacent two buildings – one a two-story office and the other a one-story bank. Numerous firefighters from Jackson Station 54 Jackson Mills and Jackson Station 55 Jackson Fire assisted in ventilation operations of both structures.

Whitesville Station 57 was also dispatched to assist with Ladder 5705, which provided stand-by ladder company coverage in town while the County Line fire operation was underway. Nearby Southard Fire Company was dispatched for assistance but was recalled as sufficient personnel were on the fire scene. The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office and District 1*2*3 Fire Official Frank McDonnell are investigating why the heating/air conditioning unit malfunctioned. Jackson First Aid Squad also responded. There were no injuries to fire fighters or occupants of the building. The scene was cleared at 3:04 a.m.

At 1127 hours on Wednesday April 25, Engine 5511, EMS 5504, Engine 5701 and 5707, Fire Official McDonnell 18307 and A/C Waters 5510 responded to a stuck elevator call in the assisted living section at Bella Terra. EMS 5504 arrived and reported four occupants in the elevator car, stuck between floors 1 & 2, with no apparent injuries.

A/C Waters established incident command, and the crews went to work. The elevator door was opened at the first floor to allow for direction communication, natural ventilation, and verbal assessment of the elevator occupants, who were not injured. While assessing the elevator occupants, since key controls were not working due to the jammed car which automatically set the locks, crews stabilized the car, and once ready, utilized the hydraulic manual over-ride valves to gently lower the car down to the first floor. All four elevator occupants resumed their day’s events just in time for lunch, with something to talk about for awhile. Bella Terra management thanked the fire department for a job well done. Kudos to the following members performing and assisting in the rescue: Captain Ed Moore; Lt. Gerard Moroney; FF Mike Grossman; FF Pat Hilger; FF James Howles; FF Mike McLaughlin; F.O. Frank McDonnell; FF Mim Stacy; and FF Jay Zimmerman.

Stations 55, 57, Jackson P.D. and Quality EMS cleared the scene at 1228 hours.

An 84 year-old female driver of a Toyota Camry was pronounced dead at Kimball Hospital this afternoon following a 2:06 p.m. crash at South Cooks Bridge and Bennetts Mills Road. The Camry was struck by a JCP&L crane truck towing a trailer that had the green light according to Jackson Police. The woman was heavily entrapped in the car which was struck broadside at the “A” and “B” posts with heavy intrusion into the interior from the passenger side. She was not wearing a seat belt and sustained multiple serious injuries from the impact. The driver of the JCP&L truck was not injured.

Responding fire fighters from Jackson Stations 54, 55 and 57 arrived on the scene within minutes with Assistant Chief Mike Waters as incident command, and the crews conducted rapid extrication and assisted Quality EMS and Mon-Oc paramedics at the scene. Crews from 5504, Engines 5421 and 5511 utilized numerous hydraulic rescue tools, secured the vehicle and also stretched a 1 3/4″ hand line as a precaution.

New Jersey State Police and Jackson Police Department conducted an extensive crash investigation lasting several hours. Stations 54, 55 and 57 were all cleared from the scene at 2:56 p.m.

A link to an Asbury Park Press story is as follows: http://www.app.com/article/20120417/NJNEWS/304170068/Woman-killed-Jackson-crash

Just as units cleared the Bennetts Mills crash, at 2:51 p.m. Jackson Stations 55 and 57 were dispatched to a one car crash on County Line Road at Steuben Lane. A driver of a Mustang Cobra lost control of his car and crossed over a median and three lanes of traffic at high speed, striking a telephone pole with the rear of the vehicle. The force of the crash was sufficient that parts of the car were strewn across the travel lanes of the road, front yard of a dentist’s office and into an adjacent parking lot. The driver was not injured.

The crew of Engine 5511 secured the vehicle as well as assisting in shutting off power to a well-head pump sheared off by the car in front of the dentists office.

The Jackson Police Department is handling the investigation. Crews cleared from that scene at 3:26 p.m.

Due to the extreme fire conditions, the NJ Forest Fire Service has ordered that all open fires are prohibited unless contained in an elevated stove using only propane, natural gas, gas, or electricity. No charcoal fires are allowed in wooded areas. This measure is being taken to prevent the possibility of inadvertent spread of fire due to sparks and embers flying into very dry combustible materials. We appreciate your cooperation during this unusually dry spring weather.

On Tuesday April 3, 2012, a neighbor looking out her front window in the 80 block of Citadel Drive at 1442 hours saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of a house across the street. While she called 9-1-1, she sent her son to alert the neighbor to get out of the house. The startled resident inside his home did not realize that discarded smoking materials outside had started a fire on his deck, which had already spread to a nearby plastic deck box, the vinyl siding, and the underside of the overhead roof soffit. As stations 54, 55 and 57 were dispatched, Fire Official McDonald, Engine 5511 and other Station 55 day shift fire fighters were just wrapping up a fire prevention program at Holman Elementary School on Manhattan Street. Arriving Jackson PD officer Candido knocked the fire down with a dry chemical extinguisher, and directed Assistant Chief Mike Waters, FF Jay Zimmerman and the other fire fighters to the scene of the fire at the rear of the house. Crews from Station 55 and Ladder 5705 checked the interior of the house including the attic and did not find any extension of the fire. Engine 5421 also stood by at the scene.

At the same time as the Citadel fire, Station 54 was dispatched to a brush fire on County Line Road. Assistant Chief Mike Lubertazzi 5410 and other Station 54 apparatus handled that call.

The cause of the Citadel fire was determined to be accidental. All 54, 55 and 57 companies were cleared at 1600 hours.

A reminder that today Sunday March 11, 2012 is the time to move your clocks forward one hour. Always a sure sign of better weather as we prepare for the coming days of summer. But, it’s also a great time to change the batteries in your smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors. And, while you are checking your home for safety items, detector manufacturers are recommending that Carbon Monoxide detectors be replaced every 5-7 years. The date of manufacture of the detector can be found on the reverse side, usually in small print, sometimes stamped. Replacement detectors can be purchased at any local hardware or “big box” retail stores. If you have any questions, stop by a fire station, and we can help.

Each year, your fire department depends on the financial support raised from taxpayers owning property within the fire district. The best way to provide that support to ensure quality, cost-effective fire protection is to vote “Yes” and approve the fire budget. Operation of our fire department includes station maintenance, training, equipment and supplies. Although many of our operating costs increase each year, the Board of Fire Commissioners of Fire District 3 Station 55 working with its employees and volunteers ensured that the overall budget proposal up for vote is within the 2% cap as set by Governor Christie.

Fire District 3 has 12 career fire fighters, one fire official, and a part-time fire prevention specialist. The Jackson Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 supports Fire District 3 with an additional 35 firefighters.

Please come out on Saturday, February 18 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.to support your fire department and vote “Yes” at the polls located at the fire station at 200 Kierych Memorial Drive (near Johnson Park).
