On Tuesday morning May 20 at 0504 hours, Stations 54 and 55 were dispatched for a structure fire on Gomberg Avenue off Hyson Road. While en route, all responding companies were notified by Ocean County Fire that it was a fully involved structure with animals inside. On arrival, Chief 5500 Chip Smith, 5510 Mike Fatovic and 5420 Ray Tremor found a barn structure at the end of Gomberg Avenue heavily involved in fire on Sides A & D.
Live animals were present inside the structure’s pen area on arrival. First arriving Engine 5521 under the command of Lt. Mike Waters was ordered by Chief Smith 5500 to stretch 2 inch and three quarter lines. Firefighter R. Waters had the knob and was backed up on the attack by Firefighters Andrew Ford, Matt and Scott Jordan. 5505’s crew as well as Jackson Mills Engine 5411 stretched an additional inch and three quarters line to begin the overhaul and eventual extinguishment of the fire. Miraculously, only one animal suffered burns since the remainder of the animals in the barn were able to be herded away from the structure. The Ocean County Fire Marshal was called to the scene to assist in determination of the cause of the fire. All companies were up at 0759 hours.
