At 0612 hours on Sunday July 6, Jackson Mills Stations 54 and Jackson Station 55 were dispatched by Ocean County Fire for a structure fire at 534 Hyson Road -- cross street BelAire.  Minutes later, a Jackson Police Department (JPD) dispatcher went on the air on Tac 1 channel and confirmed they had an officer on location with fire showing.   At 0616, Jackson Chief Chip Smith 5500 arrived on location and confirmed a well-involved one story residential structure fire, with extension to the adjacent residence nearest Side D.  County re-toned the fire indicating a confirmed fully involved structure.  Chief Smith advised County that there was no one home, but the main electrical service line was burning and on the ground and requested JCP&L to the scene forthwith.

Chief Rich D'Allesandro 5410 arrived, and 5500 and 5410 handled the fire on an Integrated Command, and requested coverage for station 54 and Monmouth County Freewood Acres Station 19-5 to the scene for a FAST team.  Engine 5521 arrived first due with Captain Tim Carson, Lt. Mike Waters and a full crew.  Engine 5521 laid a 5" water supply line from a nearby hydrant on Hyson Road,  Captain Carson ordered and commanded a 1 3/4 " line with FF Kevin McGinn and FF Ivon LaBoy to the interior while FF Rob Waters and FF Anthony Salas and Lt. Waters with a 2 1/2" line to the exterior Side A/D to knock down the body of the fire -- which had extended through the roof -- and assist the interior line in advancing their line.  The large line was then redeployed inside to assist in knock-down of the fire.

Meanwhile, Ladder/Engine 5505 commanded by Lt. Matt Baader arrived with FF Hank Muller and FF Bob Mazzeo advanced an 1 3/4" line to extinguish the exposure fire in the residence nearest Side D.  Jackson Mills Engines 5411 and 5421 arrived and their crews assisted the interior crews in extinguishment and overhaul of the fire.  Monmouth County Freehold Independent Station 16 responded to the scene and relieved Freewood Acres as the FAST team and Freewood Acres team was utilized in overhaul.  After being released from the fireground, Freewood Acres covered Station 55. After the fire was under control, a portion of the Freehold crew also assisted with interior overhaul.  Rescue 5503 was utilized as an Air Bank to fill air bottles at the scene.

One firefighter from Station 55 was injured by a falling ceiling and was transported by Quality EMS to Centra State Hospital.  He was treated and released.

Fire Safety Tips

In the hands of a child, matches and lighters can be deadly! Store them where kids can't reach them, preferably in a locked area. Teach children that matches and lighters are "tools" and should only be used by adults.
